Mike Teel -- Davey O'Brien Award Watch List

Congratulations to Mike Teel on being included in the Davey O'Brien Award watch list for 2008. The O'Brien Award is perhaps the most distinguished position award that can be given to a college quarterback. There's quite a bit of competition, of course, but Teel should have a prolific season, giving him a sporting chance. Good luck, Mike.

The Scarlet Knights take on the Cornhuskers today in Lincoln , Nebraska , in what is the Big Ten opener for both teams. A few hours before game time, Nebraska is an 11 point favorite over visiting Rutgers . In many ways the Cornhuskers season has mirrored that of the Scarlet Knights. Both teams are 1-2, with Nebraska having won a close opener vs. Arkansas State and then having dropped two close games to Oregon and Northern Illinois . Due to a need to focus on other things in my personal and professional lives, I haven't blogged since the middle of last season. But after the events of the past few weeks I feel compelled to share my thoughts on the Rutgers football program. I understand the frustrations of the fan base. We're all frustrated because we want our team to be successful and the school to have the increased stature that good sports programs add to the perception of a university. But first and foremost, I am an alumnus of the school and I always will be. As such, I will always support the student athletes at the school at which I earned my undergraduate degree. I root for professional sports teams, too. When I root for one of my favorite pro teams I refer to the players and those associated with the team as "they." Rutgers vs. Illinois Preview and a Bit of a Bye-Week Roundup

scarletknights.com After two-weeks to work on fundamentals, get a bit healthier, and prepare for Saturday's showdown with the University of Illinois Fighting Illini , Rutgers finally gets the chance to go back to showing the improvement that we saw at the start of the season. Coach Ash said that the staff "took a hard look at all three phases." The Scarlet Knights head into the contest at Memorial Stadium in Champaign to face what appears to be the most beatable opponent on the remaining schedule. Saying the Illini are beatable and then going to their home field and doing that are two different things. Like Rutgers , the Fighting Illini have recently been embroiled in a quarterback controversy. Sophomore Jeff George, Jr., just wrested the job from junior Chayce Crouch.
