Oranges are for Squeezing
The time is nigh for the Rutgers-Syracuse showdown on Saturday. As is his usual course of action, Schiano downplayed the significance of the match-up. At the weekly press conference he alluded to the idea that the players and coaches prepared the same way for this game, with the exception of having a buy week, as they have for every other game this season. Yet we all know the stakes are higher when the Orangemen come to town.
First off, a Rutgers win continues to allow the Scarlet to out recruit Syracuse in New York and New Jersey. It’s no secret that the rise of Rutgers over the last few years has coincided and come at the expense of the Orange. Schiano also stated that there is no added incentive for him to beat Greg Robinson, regardless of the disrespect Robinson has shown toward the Rutgers program in the past. I have a feeling that on camera it’s one thing but on Saturday the RU coaching staff will aim to ram it down Syracuse’s throat.
This game will pretty much determine the extent of what Rutgers has to play for during the rest of the season.
Community Foodbank of New Jersey will be collecting foodstuffs at the game on Saturday. I encourage everyone to bring what they can. Community Foodbank is a charity that has a direct benefit in the locales that it serves. Unlike international charities, supporting Community Foodbank is a way to support the betterment of your local community. You can find out more at www.njfoodbank.org.
Congratulations to Jason McCourty on being selected to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District II first team. That’s a special honor for McCourty, who coincidentally is excelling in his new role as a return man on special teams. I wouldn't be surprised if he were to take one back for pay dirt before the end of the season.
Tom Luicci of The Star-Ledgar has posted an interview with Rutgers freshman QB D.C. Jefferson. Highly recruited, Jefferson has been running the scout team this year. Without giving away too much of the article, it’s encouraging to see Jefferson’s confidence. It should be an interesting battle next spring to determine RU’s next starter.
Along the same lines, nj.com has also reported that Jabu Lovelace has returned to practice and is continuing to recover from his broken leg. He hopes to be ready to play before the end of the season.
