Fresno State Loss

There's really no way to sugarcoat it. The 24-7 loss to Fresno State today was a horrible showing. I'm still reeling from the entire day, really.

It started off promising enough. My parking assignment was upgraded this year so that we now have a spot on Busch campus. It's nice not having to take the bus after the game because we can avoid those long bus lines. Also, I parked next an alum from Don Bosco and had a good football conversation with him and his friend. One of the best things about the start of September is all the college football talk.

Sitting on the east side of the stadium, the sun was brutal today. The 4-7 time slot is really the worst for the people sitting on my side of the stadium when the weather's warm and the sun's out. But perhaps on a cold day the extra sun will be a godsend.

Some of the things that concerned me today other than the fact that we lost:

Our punt returns still have the butterfingers: a few of the punts were bobbled, but luckily they didn't cause us any turnovers. But we'll see. It appears Dennis Campbell was feeling comfortable back there by the end of the game.

Teel was disappointing: Worst problem was that today he didn't make the type of decisions or have the touch on the ball that you would expect from a 5th-year senior. That being said, it didn't seem as though the receivers were getting real good separation from their defenders, with the exception of Kenny Britt.

Underwood had a tough game. From where I sat it appeared he dropped a couple passes, but he also had some nice yards-after-catch plays.

No kicker: San San Te was awful today. He's a redshirt freshman, so I don't want to get on him too hard, but that was about as poor of a placekicking performance as you could possibly have. At least he made his extra point.

The defense played outstanding for two and a half quarters. I don't know if they just ran out of steam toward the end of the game, or if Fresno figured out their scheme, but it's tough to hang this loss on the defense. Still, you'd like to see them not give up the big play. A lot of the big runs were right up the middle, and the 2nd and 23 completion at the end of the game was a back breaker that shouldn't have happened.

Kordell Young was also a positive. He had 59 yards at half time, and I thought they should have called his number more in the second half. Mason Robinson, on the other hand, had a tough game.

Finally, it was a long sad walk back to the car with my fellow RU fans. A spiritless performance that took the wind out of our sails.

But this is a situation where they just need to have a good week of practice, right the ship, and come out strong against North Carolina so they can build some momentum going forward.
