Summer Update--Recruits
Although it's the off season, there seems to be plenty of Rutgers football action going on in Piscataway. About a month ago, us season ticket holders received a packet in the mail trumping the new additions to the stadium, along with the opportunity to get in on the premium seating. Unfortunately, I am not yet in the income bracket that would allow me to watch the game in those kinds of luxuries, but I'll have to say that if I did have that kind of bank it would be very tempting. A big time college football program should have big time amenities. The money the premium seats will bring in will only help to improve the program and the school in general.
For the past few weeks, it seems I've been getting daily e-mails from Scout.com listing yet another stellar recruit that Schiano has waiting in the wings for 2009. Much has been made about the verbals from Tom Savage and Desmond Scott. but there isn't a player on the list so far that isn't either highly rated or has excellent stats and measurements. Today, RU got a verbal from Jordan Hill, a DT from Steelton, PA. I don't know much about him, but his make-up just looks impressive. A six-foot three-inch, 260-pound defensive tackle who runs a 4.8 forty as a high school junior! Sounds good to me.
Today also marked the resignation of Big East Commissioner Mike Tranghese. It's hard to say what this means for RU or the conference. According to the report I read in the Newark Star-Ledger, he's not officially stepping down until 2009. So, that should give the schools and him enough time to find a suitable successor. I think that Tranghese will always be remembered for putting the conference back on strong footing to become a football power at a time when it seemed the defections of 2003 might have left everyone scrambling. Now, the conference is in a great position to improve its bowl tie-ins.
Of greater concern are the reports that Schiano is on the top of the short list of potential replacements for Joe Paterno. Having coached in Happy Valley, Schiano will always be the first name in the rumor mill when it comes to Penn State successors. The way I look at it is that if PSU is in fact Schiano's dream job then so be it. There's little that could change his mind. All I know is that he's already turned down offers to be considered for premier positions, and until we see him on another team's sideline, I say in Greg we will trust.
I'd also like to commend Bob Mulcahy for sticking to his guns and not allowing RU to be railroaded by Notre Dame. Many fans, myself included, have been hoping for an RU v. Notre Dame football series. Notre Dame, unfortunately, feels it would be beneath them to play at Rutgers Stadium, demanding to play the game at the Meadowlands. Give me a break! Since when does the visiting team have the audacity to demand where a game is played! The luster of Notre Dame football has dulled quite a bit in the last few years. In fact, last I checked, RU has been the better team three years running. So, props to Mulcahy for pushing away their pot of fools good.
